Batata Vada Chaat

Chaat in a general term includes many different dishes, but what’s important are the sauces and ingredients that go into it. You will need to have crispy puris, ‘sev’, green chutney and a sweet & sour chutney like tamarind sauce and also yoghurt…. Most can be made at home or bought at an Indian supermarket.

Here is my take on one, which I came up with when I had some leftover batata vadas one afternoon.

Ingredients:

Main:

4 batata vada

5 tbsp of seasoned yoghurt

2 tbsp onions, chopped

2 tbsp tomatoes, chopped

1 tsp chaat masala

1 tsp chilli powder

2 tbsp tamarind & date chutney

1 tsp coriander & mint chutney

A handful of sev & boondi

1 tbsp coriander leaves, chopped

Seasoned Yoghurt:

1 cup yoghurt

1 tbsp sugar

¼ tsp turmeric powder

½ tsp cumin powder

½ tsp chaat masala

¼ tsp salt

½ cup water

Method:

Add all the ingredients under ‘Seasoned Yoghurt’ into a bowl and whisk together. For a thicker consistency, reduce the amount of water.

It's time to layer the chaat...

Place the batata vada on a plate or dish.

Sprinkle on about 3 of the tablespoons of yoghurt.

Add the onion, tomato and sprinkle the chaat & chilli powders.

Now spoon over the tamarind sauce followed by the green chutney.

Sprinkle on the sev and boondi.

Pour over the remaining yoghurt and finally sprinkle on some fresh coriander leaves.

You can always adjust the amounts of the toppings according to your taste. Enjoy!

XOXO, Jovanka
